Poverty and homelessness

Poverty and homelessness can be reduced because social stratification promotes inequality in education and access to social amenities. Education is the only means of breaking the vicious poverty cycle and the lack of access to quality education lowers the chance of affected individual to succeed in life. The conflict theory explains the reason for poverty, and could be resolved by ensuring equalities in society. The University of Minnesota (n.p.) noted that the societal classes emanate from conflicting interests of the powerful who do their level best to ensure that they remain on top with the poor maintaining the same financial state. The social class stratification is exhibited in various life aspects such as education and access to social amenities.

Education is characterized by inequalities with the poor unable to access quality education, hence not attaining required qualifications to secure a lucrative employment position. Dula and Doulas (36) noted that constrains in access to quality education among marginalized groups or those that belong to a low socioeconomic position due to their race, immigrant status, or gender. The author added that poverty elimination through education acquisition is a major challenge due to the persistence of social stratification. Education enhances an individual’s knowledge while providing critical skills for employment acquisitions and getting a competitive advantage for seeking jobs with higher pay cut. An educated individual benefits from enhanced social relationships and resources that they could use to propel them to a better position in life.

Education statistics among various groups in society influence education access and completion. Dula and Doulas (36) highlighted tat in the United States, 1.1 million black children were suspended in primary and secondary education between 2011-2012 school years. For the girls suspended from school, 45% of them were blacks. All students in 181 districts of the Southern states were blacks. Most of these schools are characterized by the history of student harassments and negative interactions with the students which reduces the possibility of students completing their education. Racism and low educational achievements means that the marginalized groups end up settling on low-skilled employments characterized by meager earnings. Life expenses and family responsibilities may make individuals in the low social class unable to afford decent housing. Insufficient earnings and economic difficulties make it difficult for the people to afford the standards of living and they end up suffering due to poverty. The cycle continues as these groups cannot afford quality education from their children, who end up at the same position as their parents.

In conclusion, prostitution and poverty and homelessness are life situations anchored on the conflict perspective due to the different interests between the rich and the poor. Lack of access to basic needs push innocent women into prostitution. On the other and, the social stratification means that marginalized people due to their gender or racial affiliation make it impossible to access quality education and social amenities such as decent housing. Education provides an avenue to acquire education and critical skills required in competitive job openings. Inability to complete and acquire quality education restricts the employment positions that one could apply. Low skilled jobs are accompanied by minimal earnings and hinders the acquisition of basic needs and decent housing. Characteristically, social stratification in the housing sector means that some racial groups may be limited in residing in particular places due to the cost and racial restrictions. It is only through ensuring equality among social class that prostitution could remain illegal and poverty and homelessness could be eliminated.
